Peter Cleland Obituary, Death – P. Morris Clever 17 June 2023 – 14 October 1933 We announce the passing of Peter Morris Cleland, who was 90 years old, with the utmost regret. He died unexpectedly this morning at the house of his daughter Gillian and son-in-law David. Being a man of great faith his entire life, Peter was a longtime committed member and Elder of our Church. He also served honorably as Session Clerk of Newarthill Parish Church, giving our former Ministers, Rev. George S. Noble and Rev. Jim Weir, unwavering loyalty, support, and wise counsel.
Peter served as a pillar of stability, encouragement, and support for those who took over the position of Session Clerk after he resigned as Clerk in 2003. Peter was always a smart advisor and possessed a profound understanding of the Bible, the Church and its history, as well as Church law, practice, and protocol. Although Peter had many interests and pastimes, he had a strong enthusiasm for the outdoors, gardening, and farming.
The previous Sunday, when we had communion together, Peter worshipped with us for the final time. He was a beloved and cherished member of our church family. We greatly lament his departure this evening. After completing his National Service, Peter joined the police department and worked in a variety of positions, including a stint as a traffic cop, around the neighborhood. Peter was appointed Sergeant at Newarthill in 1967 and held this position until 1979, when he earned a well-deserved promotion to Inspector at Q Division, Hamilton.
He was highly known and respected within our Parish and beyond for his fair way and treatment of everyone with whom he came into touch while performing his duties. His wife predeceased him. Peter’s daughter Gillian, son-in-law David, and their family were the joy of his life six years ago in May. He treasured his granddaughters Lindsey and Emily, enjoying every moment spent with them and serving as an excellent role model and inspiration for them. He was also their entire universe.
