Merle Prentice Obituary, Death – On June 3, 2023, Merle U. Prentice, Jr., 82, of Newark Valley, New York, died quietly with his loved ones at his side. His birthday is May 6, 1941. His sisters Sandy Warren and Lois Hollister, as well as parents Merle Sr. and Violet Prentice, preceded him. His grandchildren Ron Harris, Tommy Panella, and Corey Nilon, his daughter Laura and son-in-law Tom Panella, his daughter Donna Prentice and Dean Rypkema, his brother Robert and sister-in-law Jan Prentice, and his nephews Daniel, Michael, and James Prentice also survive Merle.

Roger and Betsy, Joe, Stu, Dan, Charlie, Freddie, the crew at the Truck Stop and Harris Diner, his neighbours, as well as a number of additional nieces, nephews, and cousins, are also left to mourn his passing. Merle joined the US Air Force right after receiving his degree from NVCS. During his four years of service, he visited Europe. He returned to Newark Valley after his service, first settling at the Trout Ponds, which he was proud to help create and maintain.

He later relocated to Silk Street with his family, started his own chain saw repair business called Merle’s Motors, and started a long and illustrious career with IBM. Merle explained that IBM stood for “I Belong to Merle” if anyone questioned him about it. Merle was a contributing and engaged part of his neighbourhood. He had been a longtime employee of the Newark Valley Emergency Squad and Fire Department, where he had held the position of 1st Assistant Chief for a while.
