John McCoy Obituary, Senator John McCoy Has Passed Away

Mamoudou Diallo Drowning,

John McCoy Obituary, Death – The Department of Commerce would like to express its deepest condolences to the Tulalip Tribes and to Senator John McCoy’s family on the loss of their loved one. We believe that the late Senator John McCoy was the first tribal leader who understood the significance of a robust cooperation between the tribes and the Department of Commerce.

This is something that we credit to his leadership. While he was working with the Commerce team and guiding them through the process of learning how to be a good partner to tribal communities, he was said to have an incredible amount of patience and care for those he was interacting with. He made it a point to go out of his way on a regular basis to make himself personally available to everyone at Commerce who required assistance or had a query.
He was one of the first people of tribal descent to be elected to the Washington State Legislature, where he remained to serve for over a decade after his election. His list of achievements is broad and includes a wide variety of things, ranging from the passage of ground-breaking legislation to leadership positions within the state legislature.
We contend that his legacy—one of strong yet gentle leadership and an appreciation for the value of partnership—will prove to be his most significant contribution. The knowledge that the best way to honor his life and legacy is to continue the work he started and develop communities via meaningful collaborations brings us some solace in the midst of our grief and sorrow.
