David Karels Obituary, Death – The identities of the two men murdered in a shooting south of Colorado Springs’ downtown on Friday were released by authorities on Wednesday. According to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, the two males who died in the shooting at 1500 S. Nevada Ave. were Qualin Campbell, 31, and David Karels, 44.

Both males were fatally shot, according to the CSPD news release, although only Campbell’s death is under homicide investigation. According to the press release, Karels’ death, which was discovered in the same automobile as Campbell’s, is being looked at as a possible suicide. In a news release earlier this week, Talija Campbell’s attorneys claimed that she had called 911 to report that her husband had been taken hostage about an hour before he was discovered dead.

In texts between the Campbells that are included in the news release, Qualin Campbell is said to have sent his wife a picture of the man seated next to him, who is thought to be Karels, along with the messages “911.” Please deliver!” According to the press release, Talija Campbell gave police information about Qualin Campbell’s whereabouts and the identity of the person she said had kidnapped him.

A photo of a cellphone making an outgoing 911 call for nine minutes at 1:13 pm is included in the press release. The police did not arrive at the scene of the shooting that day until 2:10 p.m., according to earlier reports from The Gazette. Qualin Campbell was killed in that incident. Recordings and transcripts of the purported phone call between Talija Campbell and dispatchers were requested by The Gazette as part of a public records request. However, CSPD refused to provide them since the investigation was still ongoing.
